Cawley Family Farm: Better Late than Never

Here is the first egg of the farm. It was one (small) bite per Cawley.

About Our Milk

We have a small herd of Nubian dairy goats and are currently milking two of our ladies: Ruth and Fanny Mavis. They are discerning ladies who require a high standard of living in order to produce milk.

Ruth and Fanny live in a large open pen with Millie, a pesky adolescent doe. Their kids, Felicity, Matilda, and Prudence live in an adjoining pen and graze and play with their mamas during the day. The ladies have access to a covered goat yard, with hay and water, and a large pasture with lots of weeds, blackberries, trees, grass, and other delightful things to eat. They have free range of the pasture during the day, and we tuck them into the barn at night (there have been some problems with coyotes). We make every effort to make the barn a clean and comfortable living space. We don’t like being in there when it is stinky and damp and drafty, and neither do they.

The ladies are milked twice a day. The milking area is separate from the living area, although it is in the same barn. The area is swept clean before milking and the ladies are brushed well before milking begins. After their hair is all in order, we clean their udders with a disinfecting udder wipe. The milk is strained and placed in a refrigerator in the barn, so it stays at room temperature for very little time. All milking equipment is cleaned and scrubbed in between uses and disinfected with bleach weekly. We are not a commercial dairy and we do not follow “grade A” standards, but we are picky people and we like our milk to come from clean animals and a clean environment.
